Cold Weather is the Perfect Time for Self Care
Valentine's Day is about showing love for someone special in your life, but have you thought of the fact that YOU are someone special in your life? Whether you have a significant other or are single you can indulge in some self-care this Valentine's Season.
Self Care is the act of taking care of yourself. We all need to go the extra mile to take care of our physical, mental and emotional health from time to time. Self-care is especially important in the winter time, as cold weather can have an effect on our wellness. When it gets cold outside, many of us will be tempted to stay indoors and isolate ourselves. Below are some tips to make sure your spirits (and your health) up where it needs to be.
1. Go outside. While the temptation to stay in and hide from the cold winds and hard rain, this insolation from the outdoors can lead to an onset of cabin fever and depression. Bundle with long sleeves and gloves and get out in the cold fresh air to make sure your walls don't close in on you.
2. Keep yourself warm. While this may be fairly obvious, it goes beyond just bundling up when you get dressed in the morning. Taking steps to keep your core temperature at a normal level is good for your health. Cold weather can make your skin dry and affect your circulation. Try these steps:
- Wear a hoodie or long sleeves indoors
- Drink warm beverages
- Use warm clean towels fresh out of the dryer
- Moisturize when your skin gets dry
3. Exercise. Not only will getting your blood pumping combat your dropping energy levels, going for a run in that beanie and warm hoodie will help on the days when that cold weather makes you feel a bit down.
4. Hydrate. Make sure you keep drinking water on a daily basis to counter-act all that hot chocolate and eggnog your sending into your belly to keep warm.
5. See your friends. Winter activities and staying warm are a great step, but seeing your friends on the regular will keep you from isolating yourself. Having friends to join you in these winter activities will motivate keep active and social.
6. Plan. Winter is the time to make a plan to put those New Year's Resolutions into action. Keep your goals small, simple, and attainable. Try setting a series of smaller goals that add up to a bigger goal.
It's easy to see why people see the new year as a time for a fresh start. Take the time to take care of overall health this winter. These extra steps will be worth the boost to your physical and emotional well-being this year.
